Clan MacQuarrie is one of the seven clans descended from King Alpin. Like their cousins the MacKinnons, they are said to be kindred of St. Columba, and their original lands were on Ulva, near Iona. They also shared the Island of Mull with the MacKinnons in early times.

Clan MacQuarrie supported Bruce, and followed the Lords of the Isles, and, likewise as the MacKinnons, supported the MacLeans in later years. Lachlan MacQuarrie was forced to sell the lands on Ulva in 1778 and the clan was dispersed.
