The existing hall is some 50 years old, having been built using
money donated by the Clan Line Shipping Company in the early 1950s.
The donation was made as formal recognition of the hospitality and
assistance given to the officers and crew of the merchant vessel,
Clan MacQuarrie.
Running aground at Borve in a severe storm on the night of 31st
January 1953, the lives of all 66 men aboard were saved thanks to
the remarkable actions of the local community. Although benefiting
from some emergency repairs over the last two to three years, the
hall is fast approaching the end of its useful life. It is very
small, major cracks are appearing in the walls, the internal flooring
is rotting and the facilities are unsuited to the established needs
of the community.
Presently, the hall is used for pre-school, keep fit classes, community
group meetings etc. It has insufficient space and facilities to
cater for any larger size gatherings. For example, it cannot cater
for the needs of youth clubs, sports/recreational uses, community
events, school concerts, old folks dinners, fund-raising events
etc.
Alternative venues in the community are limited - the school canteen
has been used previously but it suffers from many of the same limitations
as the existing hall. The only other possible venue is local licensed
premises, however it is only really suitable for a tiny minority
of the events desired. Nor, due to it being a public house, is it
an acceptable venue to many within the community.
